2020 Melrose Makos Coaching Staff


Jen Metheny

Jen Metheny has been involved in swimming since a young age.  Coaching for over 25 years, she spends the school year teaching and the summers around the pool.  Jen has coached both summer swimming and high school swimming.

Brian Metheny
Brian Metheny has been a swim coach for over 50 years.  He is one of the founders of the Desert Swim League.   Brian spent many years teaching High School and coaching many sports.  He is currently coaches the swim team at Sunnyslope High School with Mike Brauer. 

Mike Brauer
Mike Brauer began his competitive swimming career right here at Melrose in 1978, swimming for the Makos until 1985. Like many Melrose swimmers, he also competed for the Matadors at Shadow Mountain High School. From 1986-1989, he coached in the Desert Swim League for the now-defunct La Mancha Dolphins. Mike’s love of working with children eventually brought him to a career in education, and he has been teaching English since 1997. When he took a job at Sunnyslope High School in 2011, he began coaching the swim team there with Brian Metheny, and they have been working together ever since, including coaching the YMCA Sharks with Jen Metheny. Mike is also an active member of the Phoenix Swim Club Masters team and coaches the PSC Special Olympics team. He has been married to his wife, Holly, since 1993, and they have two teenage sons, Eston and Max. Mike is thrilled to be returning to the place that made him a life-long swimmer.
Victoria Hobrock
Victoria is a incoming Freshman at Grand Canyon University Honors College on an academic scholarship and has committed to swim with their club swim team. Victoria started swimming when she was 5 years old with the Tucson Los Tiburones team. She joined Melrose in 2010 and has been here since! Her competitive swimming career includes training at Phoenix Swim Club where she represented the club at the State level. She also represented Shadow Mountain High School for state competition ever year since joining as a freshman and was Rookie of the Year, as well as 3x Swim MVP. Her hobbies include Triathlons, music and spending time with her family.
